Brixton Rec Boxing Gym
Brixton Recreation Centre
When the softplay area at Brixton Rec was relocated to the Atrium on the ground floor, an opportunity arose to provide Afewee Boxing Club a new, better-suited space within the building.
Dannatt Johnson Architects were appointed to convert these historic squash courts-turned jungle gym rooms into a boxing gym. This involved reinstating the spaces to their original volumes and revealling their brutalist waffle slab ceilings once more. Services, in particular mechanical ventilation, needed to be overhauled to ensure a space that was fit for purpose. In consultation with the end user, we also created further usable floor space through the inclusion of a mezzanine; which allows for more concurrent uses by the Club, an office for the manager was also provided.
This move not only was beneficial to the Club, but also the Council, as the lower ground space was then available for conversion to another revenue-generating use; a bowling alley.
